Virat Kohli: The Fastest to 10,000 ODI Runs

India’s cricketing icon Virat Kohli etched his name in the history books during the second ODI against West Indies in Vishakapatnam. On October 24/2018 Kohli became the fastest player to reach 10,000 runs in One Day Internationals (ODIs), achieving the milestone in just 205 innings.

This records with Kohli surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s achievement by an impressive 54 innings. He also set the benchmark in terms of time taken completing the milestone in just 10 years and 67 days which is 257 days faster than Rahul Dravid.

Kohli’s Journey to 10,000 ODI Runs

Virat Kohli scored his first ODI run in 2008 under Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s captaincy. A decade later, in 2018, it was fitting that Dhoni stood at the crease alongside Kohli as he crossed the 10,000-run mark.

By joining the 10K club, Kohli cemented his position among legends of the game, including Indian icons Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, and M.S. Dhoni. The prestigious list also features non-Asians such as Ricky Ponting, Jacques Kallis, and Brian Lara.

Key Milestones and Records

  • Fastest to 10K: Kohli achieved the milestone in 205 innings, a record 54 innings ahead of Tendulkar.
  • Consistency Personified: Kohli scored 20 of his 36 ODI centuries during successful chases, with an unmatched average of 98.25 in such games.
  • Chasing Greatness: Eight of his centuries came while chasing scores above 300, showcasing his incredible ability to handle pressure.
  • Impact Player: India’s win percentage when Kohli scores a century is 89%.

Another Feather in the Cap

Kohli’s century in the first ODI against West Indies in Guwahati also made him the fastest player to reach 60 international centuries—36 in ODIs and 24 in Tests. His exceptional consistency and ability to perform under pressure have solidified his reputation as one of the greatest cricketers in history.

As Kohli continues to dominate the cricketing world, his journey is a testament to hard work, determination, and an unwavering passion for the game
